From the Principal

Exciting opportunities await you and your child at Chicora Elementary where we focus on educating the whole child. At Chicora, we have many programs in place to ensure that each of our students becomes a successful, life-long learner and a productive citizen. This is a school where every student matters!
We are currently entering our third year of the Reading First grant, where the goal is that all children will read well by the end of third grade. This grant was awarded to only six schools in Charleston County. This grant provides professional development for the staff, lots of great books, and other reading resources.
In addition to Reading First, Chicora also implements the READ 180 program, after-school tutoring, and computer-assisted instruction. As part of our literacy program, the 25-book campaign encourages all students to read and ends each year with a reading celebration.
Chicora received the Palmetto Silver Award for the school year 2004-2005. This award goes to schools that dramatically improve their students’ academic performance.
The Community of Readers recognized Chicora Elementary as a Terrific Ten school. This means the school scored in the top ten applicants for its schoolwide reading program.
Our parenting program is outstanding. The Parents Participating for Progress workshops shows how parents can become partners with their children’s school. They also have computer classes for parents, and last year parents were given a refurbished computer upon completion of the program.
Students are recognized for academics, as well as good citizenship, through our Awards Ceremonies, Blue Eagle incentive program, Exceptional Eagle program, and Super Trooper partnership with the North Charleston Police Department.
Our mentoring program is one of the best! Mentors from the community meet with their students on a weekly basis, usually by joining them for lunch buddies.
We are looking forward to another great year at Chicora! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail. If you are in the neighborhood, we have an “Open Door Policy,” so please stop by and visit.

                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                      Camille Lee
                                                                      Principal
